According to an Android Authority story, Google is testing a new feature that would let users start WhatsApp video chats straight from Google Messages. By doing away with the need to switch between apps, this upgrade seeks to improve communication.
How the Feature Works
During an APK teardown of Google Messages version 20250131, Assemble Debug from Android Authority successfully activated and tested the feature. If both users have WhatsApp installed and configured, tapping the video call button within Google Messages will automatically start a WhatsApp call. However, if the recipient does not have WhatsApp, the system is expected to default to Google Meet.
Current Limitations and Future Possibilities
The feature is currently only available for private one-on-one conversations. Reports, however, indicate that in upcoming versions, it might also include group discussions. For video calls, Google Messages currently uses Google Meet, which requires both users to have the app installed, be signed into their Google accounts, and have a phone number that supports LTE.
Although Google Meet is a dependable video communication tool, WhatsApp is the most often used software for private video conversations. Adding WhatsApp as a substitute for Google Messages might greatly enhance user experience by providing a more streamlined and recognizable interface for daily use.

Google has not officially announced when this feature will be available to the public. For Google, which has always depended on its first-party services, this is a big change. A more flexible strategy is indicated by the integration of WhatsApp into Google Messages, which frees users from being restricted to Google’s ecosystem and lets them select their favorite communication app.
