A new feature called trial reels is being launched, offering creators a chance to test content with individuals who aren’t already following them.
For those who’ve hesitated to try fresh ideas due to concerns about follower reactions, trial reels provide an opportunity to experiment without the pressure. This feature removes much of the uncertainty around how content will be received.
Gauge Content Appeal Before Sharing with Followers
Many creators have shared concerns about overposting or stepping outside their usual niche, fearing their audience might not connect with the new direction.
Trial reels display content to non-followers first. Creators can ex45plore different themes, storytelling styles, or topics and observe initial reactions. If the results are promising, the reel can either be shared manually with followers or set to automatically go live after the trial period if it performs well.
Steps to Use Trial Reels
Use the same procedures as for creating a reel to produce a trial reel. Before posting, toggle on the “Trial” option. Once shared, these trial reels are accessible from your profile but remain visible only to you unless they’re later made public.
Trial reels won’t appear on the main grid or Reels tab of your profile and won’t be shown in your followers’ feeds or Reels tabs. However, there’s a chance the trial reel might reach followers indirectly through shared direct messages or reels linked by the same audio, location, or filter.
After around 24 hours, engagement metrics such as views, likes, comments, and shares can be reviewed in the reel viewer. Insights comparing the trial’s performance to past ones will also be provided.
If the sample reel is doing well, creators can choose to share it widely. Alternatively, an automatic sharing option can be enabled, allowing Instagram to distribute the reel to followers if it gains enough traction during the first 72 hours. You can change this setting whenever you like.
Once made public, the reel will appear on the profile grid and be eligible for visibility across all Instagram platforms.
Early Feedback from Creators
Trial reels have been in testing since earlier this year, with the final version reflecting valuable input from creators. Early adopters have reported strong engagement with new audiences and existing followers alike, thanks to these trial runs.
Starting today, trial reels will gradually become available globally to eligible creators. This addition is part of ongoing efforts to help creators share their unique stories while achieving their goals.
