Couple of days back, TechCrunch broke the news that Facebook had cleared messages of Mark Zuckerberg and other executives on the Messenger. Although Facebook mentioned security issues that prompted the company to delete top management’s messages, it certainly raised eye brows, especially after company’s recent confession about scanning user messages.
Right now, deleting messages is not a privilege everyone has. It may be available for everyone in the times to come.
In a statement, the company said:
We have discussed this feature several times. And people using our secret message feature in the encrypted version of Messenger have the ability to set a timer — and have their messages automatically deleted. We will now be making a broader delete message feature available. This may take some time. And until this feature is ready, we will no longer be deleting any executives’ messages. We should have done this sooner — and we’re sorry that we did not.
The statement mentions the existing ‘secret message’ tool that lets users to send encrypted, self-destructing messages but that feature has not surfaced yet.
WhatsApp has recently rolled out a new feature of deleting messages for everyone. It seems like Facebook is all set to make the new delete message feature available for everyone soon.
