Over a number of years, Apple has worked with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in order to receive the De Novo classification for the ECG App and the irregular heart rhythm notification. It is no doubt one of the most important features of series 4 of the Apple Watch. The ECG app on Apple Watch series 4 has come out now as the first direct-to-consumer product that enables customers to take an electrocardiogram right from their wrist.

The ECG app feature:
A test known as the electrocardiogram records the timing and strength of the electrical signals that make the human heart beat. By looking at it, a doctor gains the insight about the rhythm of your heart and if there are any irregularities in it. This is a feature that has been incorporated in the Apple Watch series 4 to check the recording of the atrial fibrillation (AFib).

The app will check the pulse to record your heart rate and see of the upper or lower chamber of your heart are in a rhythm. Incase of irregularity, it notifies right away.
Getting ECG on the Apple Watch:
The app is only available on the series 4 of the Apple Watch for which the watch must be running watch OS 5.2.1 or later. An iPhone 5 or later running iOS 12.1.1 or later should be connected to the Apple Watch.
Setting up the ECG app:
For setting up the ECG app you will need your iPhone. Once downloaded and installed iOS 12.1.1 and watchOS 5.1.2 there will be a new notification that will appear when you will first open up the Health app on the iOS. You need to tap on the Set up ECG App and follow the instructions that have been laid out. You will be required to enter your date of birth and it will notify you of the various results that will be taken in by the ECG app. then you will be asked to take a first ECG reading and will then move on to the next step.
Using on Apple watch:
When you will be setting the ECG feature initially you will be required to take an ECG reading on the Apple Watch. For this purpose, you must tap on the ECG app icon on the app grid and for this to work, Apple watch must be on your wrist. Simply hold your finger down on the digital crown for 30 seconds and when you are done, simply tap.
Viewing the ECG Data:
The data after taking the ECG doesn’t disappear and get stored in the Health app. It is easily accessible from there and you can view the readings that you have taken. You can even share them with your doctors once you have noted them.
