OpenAI has launched ChatGPT on WhatsApp, offering free, user-friendly AI interactions similar to chatting with a friend or Meta’s AI.
This is the tenth announcement in OpenAI’s “12 Days of OpenAI” series, which features both major updates and smaller enhancements. Users worldwide can now add +1-1800-242-8478 as a WhatsApp contact, making AI accessible even on low-data connections.
With WhatsApp’s massive 2.7 billion active users, the platform provides an excellent opportunity for OpenAI to expand its reach, especially in areas with limited high-speed internet. This move also positions OpenAI against growing competition from Meta’s AI tools.
“People in regions with poor connectivity can now access AI assistance without relying on the data-intensive ChatGPT app,” OpenAI highlighted.
ChatGPT on WhatsApp uses OpenAI’s GPT-4o-mini model, the same version as the free ChatGPT app. Users can interact with the AI for creative writing, idea brainstorming, travel or recipe suggestions, or general conversations about news, hobbies, and more.
Users in the U.S. can access an added feature that enables voice calls with ChatGPT, using OpenAI’s Realtime API for a lively and interactive experience.
OpenAI highlights that this release is experimental and may have rate limits or limited availability based on demand. Users needing advanced features, higher usage limits, or tailored experiences are encouraged to use ChatGPT via their current accounts.
