“I feel a visceral feeling right now, as if someone has broken into our home and stolen something,” Chen wrote, according to a memo obtained by Wired.

Chen added that he, CEO Sam Altman, and other senior leaders have been working nonstop to speak with team members who’ve received offers from competitors—particularly Meta.

“We’ve been more proactive than ever before,” Chen said. “We’re recalibrating comp and scoping out creative ways to recognize and reward top talent.”

Meta’s Hiring Surge Raises Alarm

The memo comes in the wake of reports that at least eight researchers have left OpenAI for Meta in just one week. This includes some of the company’s top minds, many of whom helped shape its core models and infrastructure.

Meta has been aggressively expanding its AI teams and has reportedly approached talent at rival companies, offering highly attractive packages. In a recent podcast, Altman claimed that Meta has been offering signing bonuses as high as $100 million—a number Meta insiders later downplayed but did not fully deny.
