A graphic designer in Lahore sees “+329%” beside AI video generation in Upwork’s latest skills report and signs up for a three-month course the same evening. Upwork’s data, which compares freelancer earnings in 2025 with 2024, does show demand for top AI-enabled skills growing 109% year on year, led by AI video generation and editing (+329%), AI integration (+178%), AI data annotation and labeling (+154%), AI image generation and editing (+95%) and AI chatbot development (+71%). But those percentages measure growth, not size, so they should shape what you test next, not what you commit months to.
The five fastest-growing AI skills
Figures below come from Upwork’s own release, which is also reproduced by AI Magazine via GlobeNewswire. All are year-on-year growth in freelancer earnings on the Upwork marketplace.
- AI video generation and editing: +329%
- AI integration: +178%
- AI data annotation and labeling: +154%
- AI image generation and editing: +95%
- AI chatbot development: +71%
Upwork also reports that its Human+Agent Productivity Index found human and AI collaboration lifting project completion by up to 70%, and that 77% of business leaders say AI is raising their need for specialized, fractional talent.
Why a percentage is not a market
Two details in the methodology change how you should read the list. Demand originates in the United States, and only completed jobs were analyzed. A skill also needed just $100,000 in aggregate freelancer earnings in its category to qualify. A skill that jumped from a small base can post a huge percentage while still offering fewer contracts than a mature skill growing at 20%. Upwork’s own “most in-demand” lists, which are ranked by volume, are led by things like full stack development, graphic design, data analytics and social media marketing, not by the fastest growers.
So the sensible reading is that AI skills are growing quickly on top of established categories, and the biggest pool of work is usually still in the established ones.
Attach the new skill to one you already sell
The least risky route is to add an AI layer to a service you can already price. A video editor adds AI video generation, a developer adds AI integration, a researcher moves into data annotation. This also avoids the trap we described in AI cleanup work is the new post-editing, where the job becomes fixing machine output at a low rate. And the earnings gap between freelancers who use AI well and those who merely use it is the subject of Two Freelancers Both Do AI Work.
Check that Pakistan-side demand and your costs still work
Since the demand Upwork measured is US-originated, price your proposals in dollars and count the cost of bidding. What Connects cost in rupees is worth calculating before you plan a launch week of 40 proposals. On the supply side, Pakistan’s IT sector is growing too: IT exports reached $435 million in September 2026, which suggests plenty of buyers and competitors in the same pool.
A 30-day test before you commit
Pick one skill from the list that sits next to your current service. In week one, search it on the marketplace and count how many open jobs fit what you can already do, and note the budgets stated. In weeks two and three, build one small sample project and send a limited, tailored set of proposals, for example [N] proposals, recording replies. In week four, compare reply rate and budget against your normal work. If the new skill does not beat your baseline by [X%], keep it as an add-on rather than a pivot.
The report is a useful map of where freelancer earnings are moving. It is not a promise about where yours will go, and a one-month experiment tells you more than a percentage can.
