Canva Announces National Competition to Rebrand PIA Under New Ownership

Canva Announces National Competition to Rebrand PIA Under New Ownership

Canva has a new idea. It wants Pakistanis to help redesign PIA. Instead of hiring a branding agency, the company suggests holding a nationwide design competition. The winning ideas could shape the airline’s new identity after its change in ownership.

The proposal appeared in a LinkedIn post on Monday. It came from Ahmed Iqbal, Canva’s General Manager for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. He said Canva wants to discuss the idea with PIA’s management.

The plan goes beyond designing a new logo. Canva wants people to submit ideas for the airline’s brand guidelines, aircraft livery, and marketing campaign. The company is also willing to offer attractive cash prizes. The goal is to encourage designers from across Pakistan to participate.

Iqbal described the project with a simple message. “Designed by Pakistanis, for Pakistanis.” He believes public participation could help rebuild trust in the airline. It could also showcase Pakistan’s creative talent.

To explain his vision, he shared two sample aircraft designs. Both featured traditional Ajrak artwork. He also revealed something surprising. The designs were created by someone who wasn’t a professional designer. They used Canva and Affinity tools to produce them.

The idea quickly attracted attention online. Some people loved it. Others raised practical concerns.

Several users pointed out that aircraft design is not just about appearance. Every layer of paint adds weight. A heavier aircraft burns more fuel. That means higher operating costs.

Others highlighted another issue. Dark colors absorb more heat from the sun. This increases cooling requirements. It can also make aircraft inspections more difficult. That is one reason why most commercial planes remain mostly white.

Despite those concerns, many users supported the proposal. They said it could highlight Pakistan’s culture and artistic heritage. Some suggested using Ajrak, truck art, calligraphy, or regional patterns in future designs.

One marketing professional also praised the idea. However, they offered a word of caution. They argued that PIA should improve its services first. A new brand works best when it reflects real improvements. Otherwise, passengers may see it as only a cosmetic change.

The same commenter noted that airline liveries are subject to engineering rules. Designers can provide creative ideas. But aviation experts must ensure every design meets safety standards.

Many readers agreed with that balanced approach. They felt creativity and practicality should go hand in hand. Public ideas could inspire the final design. Engineers and branding specialists could then refine the winning concept.

For now, Canva’s proposal remains an idea. PIA has not responded publicly. Even so, the discussion has generated excitement. It has also started a wider conversation about design, culture, and the future of Pakistan’s national airline.
