Some ChatGPT subscribers have noticed a new feature showing up in their drop-down list of tools—it’s called “Study Together.”
Right now, it’s not entirely clear what the feature does, but early users say it seems designed to turn ChatGPT into a better study partner. Instead of just answering your questions right away, it flips the script, asking you questions and encouraging you to think through the answers yourself. In a way, it feels like OpenAI’s answer to Google’s LearnLM project.
There’s also some speculation about whether this tool might eventually include a group feature—where multiple people can join a single chat and study together in real time. That would make it more like a digital study group than a one-on-one chat with an AI tutor.

We reached out to OpenAI to ask about the feature, but they didn’t respond. ChatGPT itself had this to say:
“OpenAI hasn’t officially announced when or if Study Together will be available to all users — or if it will require ChatGPT Plus.”
What makes this tool interesting is the timing and the bigger picture. ChatGPT has quickly become a major player in the world of education, for better or worse. On the one hand, teachers are using it to create lesson plans, explain tricky topics, and save time. Students, on the other hand, often use it like a tutor.
But there’s a flip side. Some students also use it to write their essays or finish assignments without doing the work themselves. That’s led to growing concern among educators, with some even saying tools like ChatGPT are “killing” higher education.
Maybe, just maybe, “Study Together” is OpenAI’s way of moving things in a better direction. It could help students engage with what they’re learning. Not just copy-and-paste answers. It might change ChatGPT’s role—from a shortcut to a more thoughtful study partner. One that supports learning instead of replacing it.
Whether this new mode becomes widely available or stays in quiet testing for now, one thing’s clear—OpenAI is still experimenting with what ChatGPT can do in the classroom. And “Study Together” could be the start of something new.
