China Unveils Quantum Chip 1 Quadrillion Times Faster Than Supercomputers

Chinese analysts have built a quantum processing unit (QPU) that is 1 quadrillion (10¹⁵) times quicker than supercomputers.

According to researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei:

The Zuchongzhi 3.0, a 105-qubit superconducting chip, marks a major leap in quantum computing.

This breakthrough challenges Google’s Willow QPU, which in December 2024 set new guidelines for quantum supremacy—the point where quantum computers outperform the speediest supercomputers.

A Quantum Leap in Speed

The researchers tested the Zuchongzhi 3.0 using the random circuit sampling (RCS) benchmark, a common quantum computing test. Their processor completed the task in mere seconds1 million times faster than Google’s previous Sycamore chip (October 2024).

For comparison, Frontier, the world’s second-fastest supercomputer, would require 5.9 billion years to illuminate the same problem.

While these results highlight the control of quantum processors, a few specialists note that classical computing calculations proceed to advance, which may offer assistance conventional supercomputers contract the gap.

Advancing Quantum Computing Technology

The Zuchongzhi 3.0 chip highlights 105 transmon qubits, arranged in a 15×7 cross section. These qubits, made from metals like:

  • Tantalum
  • Niobium
  • Aluminum

These are planned to be less influenced by noise—a key challenge in quantum computing.

Two critical improvements in this version include:

  • Longer coherence time – This measures how long qubits stay in their quantum state, allowing for more complex calculations.
  • Better gate fidelity and error correction – The chip achieved a 99.90% accuracy rate for single-qubit operations and 99.62% for two-qubit operations.

Google’s Willow QPU slightly edged out these results, with 99.97% and 99.86% fidelity respectively.

These advancements were made possible through better chip fabrication methods, optimized qubit designs, and improved lithography techniques using tantalum and aluminum.
