PTA Enables VPN Registration for Freelancers Using Phone Numbers

Freelancers Can Use Mobile Numbers to Register VPNs

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched a new initiative allowing IT freelancers to register Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) using their mobile numbers. This step aims to enhance secure and uninterrupted VPN usage while avoiding blanket bans on these essential tools for digital professionals.

Streamlined VPN Registration Process

Freelancers can now register their VPNs online by providing their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC), business details, and taxpayer status. This streamlined procedure guarantees uninterrupted access while meeting legal obligations, particularly for those without static IP addresses.

The fact that more than 31,000 VPNs have already been registered under this framework shows how the PTA is working to strike a compromise between cybersecurity issues and the practical requirements of Pakistani IT professionals and freelancers.

No Blanket Ban on VPNs

The PTA’s endeavor makes it clear that the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 does not support a total VPN ban. To ensure safe operations without limiting access, the emphasis is instead on encouraging compliance by requiring VPN users to register their networks.

Addressing Challenges in the IT Sector

This move comes in response to growing concerns over internet disruptions, which have caused the IT sector to lose more than $1 million per hour. Industry experts stress the importance of reliable internet access, supportive policies, and robust infrastructure to meet the government’s $15 billion export target for the IT industry.

By introducing mobile-based VPN registration, PTA is helping freelancers and businesses navigate these challenges, creating a more favourable environment for digital operations in Pakistan.

Supporting Digital Transformation

This initiative reflects a forward-looking approach to cybersecurity and digital enablement. It underscores the importance of collaboration between regulatory authorities and the IT sector to drive Pakistan’s digital transformation.

By ensuring secure and reliable internet access, the PTA’s system empowers freelancers to expand their digital reach, contributing to economic growth and aligning with the government’s vision of a thriving IT export industry.
