The world of AI chatbots is heating up, and every company is fighting for users’ attention. Google just made a big move: it’s now easier than ever to bring your information and past chats from other chatbots into Gemini.
Introducing the “Switching Tools”
On Thursday, Google rolled out a new set of features called “switching tools.” These tools let you directly transfer personal details, preferences, and even entire chat histories from other platforms to Gemini. The idea is simple: you shouldn’t have to start over when you switch chatbots. Gemini can learn your interests, friends, family, and routines from the start.
How the Memory Feature Works
Gemini’s memory feature is built to make onboarding painless. You type a prompt into your current chatbot, get a response, and then copy it back into Gemini. That way, Gemini quickly learns the key facts about you without hours of setup. Once the information is in, the AI remembers it and can offer advice or answers tailored to your life, instead of treating you as a brand-new user.

Uploading Your Chat Histories
If you want to bring over your old conversations, that’s easy too. You can upload chat logs in a zip file from most platforms, including ChatGPT and Claude. Once imported, Gemini organizes your old chats, making it simple to continue past conversations or search through them whenever needed.
Google’s Goal: Catching Up to ChatGPT
ChatGPT continues to dominate the consumer AI market, boasting around 900 million weekly active users. Gemini, despite being widely available on Android and Chrome, has around 750 million monthly users.
These new switching tools are Google’s way of closing that gap, giving users a smoother path to move their data and keep their digital life intact.
