Increasing broadband access in Pakistan accelerates freelancing growth

According to the latest reports by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), freelance writing is becoming a most popular norm among the graduates. The availability of broadband in major cities has accelerated the growth of freelance marketplace. Human Capital in the country constitutes of 16% of the younger age group and more than 10,000 IT graduates enter Pakistani market annually. These graduates are becoming self-independent by writing online. Major proportion of these graduates is centered on females who earn money by working from their homes.

Pakistan is ranked among those top countries who are earning through freelance work. According to Elance Desk Annual Impact Report 2014, Pakistan gained 5th position in terms of freelancers with maximum earning index. It is estimated that one in three workers would be freelancing worldwide by 2020. The emerging talent, growth value for money, and customer feedback in the field of freelancing has made Pakistan one of the top two outsourcing destinations.

According to MIT Technology Review Pakistan, there are almost 1,500 registered IT companies working in the country. The freelancers work 34 hours per week and provide high quality projects to the clients around the world. The PTA’s report has highlighted the benefits of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the education sector. The report says that this can work as an efficient tool in order to improve the literacy rates in the country.

Also, Massive Open Online course (MOOC) is being highly appreciated and people are getting knowledge without any limitation of attending the institutions. The Virtual University was established in 2002 in order to help students who live in rural areas. This initiative has enabled many students to attain formal education and graduate degrees without being forced to travel to urban areas for higher education.
