Meta’s Twitter rival, Threads, continues its steady climb, now reaching 400 million monthly active users—up from 350 million in April. Alongside the user growth, Meta reports that people are spending more time in the app, thanks to ongoing improvements to the Threads algorithm.
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri shared the milestone:
“As of a few weeks ago, there are more than 400 million people active on Threads every month. It’s been quite the ride over the last two years. This started as a zany idea to compete with Twitter, and has evolved into a meaningful platform that fosters the open exchange of perspectives. I’m grateful to all of you for making this place what it is today.”
The growth keeps Threads on track to close in on X’s reported user numbers. Elon Musk claims X has 600 million MAU, but data paints a different picture.
X’s Numbers Under Question
Official EU filings show X has lost 15% of its European user base since Musk took over. Third-party analytics also indicate a drop in mobile users, though the platform still draws decent web traffic. However, with web usage making up only around 20% of X’s activity, the overall trend suggests a decline, not growth.
If that’s accurate, Threads may be much closer to X’s active user count than Musk’s figures imply. As more influencers and celebrities migrate to Threads, engagement there is steadily increasing, positioning it as a real contender for the real-time social media crown.

Bluesky’s Struggle to Compete
Some users still prefer alternatives like Bluesky, partly because it’s independent of major corporations and isn’t subject to the same shareholder or political pressures. But despite a surge in sign-ups after the last U.S. election, Bluesky’s momentum has slowed.
The platform now sits at 38 million total users—a passionate, loyal base, but far from the numbers needed to challenge Threads or X in any significant way.
