OpenAI Plans to Watermark ChatGPT Images — But There’s a Twist

Watermarks might soon be added to your attempt to use ChatGPT 4o (how to produce to create Studio Ghibli-style graphics. This implies that even though you can make photographs just like this one, you will only be able to download them with a watermark. @btibor91, an AI researcher, explained the impending ChatGPT developments on X (previously Twitter).

The new ImageGen watermark is described as “image-gen-watermark-for-free” (perhaps just for free users) in the ChatGPT Android software 1.2025.091 2509108 beta, according to one of the main points.

However, if you subscribe to the Plus version, everything can be stored. According to reports, the watermark feature is exclusive to free-tier users. However, it is uncertain if OpenAI would proceed with its image watermarking intentions. The company has not confirmed, and the proposal is subject to complete revision.

Furthermore, the researcher pointed out that OpenAI plans to introduce new capabilities in addition to making it free for college students in the US and Canada. “Structured Thoughts, Reasoning Recap, CoT Search Tool, and l1239dk1” are possible new additions. Once more, no formal announcement or other information regarding these future tools has been made. Sam Altman, the CEO, has revealed some future ideas in the meantime.

Following the release of the GPT 5 launch roadmap a few months ago, Altman has also stated that OpenAI plans to release the o3 and o4-mini models before the flagship model. His X article states that both models will be available “probably in a couple of weeks.” After that, in a few months, the GPT-5 will be released. The best aspect, he said,

“We are going to be able to make GPT 5 much better than we originally thought.”

There are several reasons why the launch date currently looks like this.

Returning to ChatGPT 4o Image Generation, which was introduced two weeks ago, it is still popular, especially in India. According to Brad Lightcap, the Chief Operating Officer of OpenAI, the introduction of image production in ChatGPT was a “very crazy first week for images in ChatGPT.”

More than 700 million photographs have been created by users since April 1, and 130 million people have used the new function. Lightcap also referred to India as their fastest-growing market, highlighting the swift expansion of ChatGPT’s user base there. He went on to say,

“The variety of visual creativity has been incredibly inspiring.”
