PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN: The recently launched Prison Management Information System (PMIS) and E-Visit App were formally inaugurated by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur on Wednesday afternoon, signaling a major advancement in the province government’s efforts to improve prison conditions and the well-being of its prisoners.
The Prison Management Information System(PMIS) has completely digitised jail activities, combining all 39 of the province’s facilities to the court system and to one another, authorities emphasized at a presentation.
Virtual Court & E-Visit AppÂ
The prisoners no longer need to be physically transferred for appearances in court because of the system’s ability to provide virtual court sessions via video connection.
In the same spirit, the recently released E-Visit App makes it possible for prisoners and their families to meet virtually, doing away with the requirement for visits in person and enhancing the ease of communication.
Regarding additional reform attempts, it was noted that the jail food menu has been updated to ensure a healthy diet after seven years in jail, and that Rs1.2 billion is spent yearly on prisoner meals.
The jail guidelines will be brought into compliance with international norms, such as the Bangkok Rules and Mandela’s Rules. Prisoners are also receiving better healthcare services and advanced medical equipment.
Prisoner games and vocational training programs have been implemented to provide offenders with a variety of skills and to encourage their physical and mental health.
Economic Integration, Expansion, and Security Upgrades
In order to give inmates monetary benefits, the jail sector has also been resurrected and integrated with the economic system. Additionally, according to officials, 317 K-P prisoners who used to be housed in Lahore have been returned to the state.
Furthermore, the provincial government is emphasizing the building and expansion of jails around the entire region. While money has been authorized for an additional jail in Districts Tank, the issue of crowding will be resolved with the closing of District Jail Swabi and Central Jail DI Khan.
In the same way, Rs1.39 billion was set aside for the purchase of contemporary safety technology for prisons, and five provincial prison administrations have been established to enhance jail administration. Innovative interview spaces have also been constructed to guarantee secure and practical encounters between inmates and their families.
Prison Reforms, Global Collaborations Commendable
The Chief Minister praised the appropriate authorities for putting the Prison Management Information System into place and carrying out further reformation projects. “Today’s event is an important turning point in the history of jail changes,”Â
“This collaborative effort is a milestone in improving prison facilities and offender social assistance,” He said, thanking the United Nations Department on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the International Network for Narcotics and Law Enforcement for the collaboration.
