Spotify Lets You Add Custom Transitions to Playlists

Spotify is giving its Premium subscribers a brand-new tool to make playlists sound more polished and personal. On Tuesday, the company introduced custom transitions, a feature that lets you add smooth mixes between tracks. You can either let Spotify apply automatic transitions or pick your own style from presets like fade, rise, or blend.

To use the tool, open any playlist and tap “Mix” on the toolbar. From there, you can experiment with transition types, tweak volume and EQ, and add effects. Spotify even shows you each song’s waveform, beat data, key, and BPM, so you can choose the perfect moment to switch tracks—great for beginners trying their hand at DJ-style mixing.

The update is built for music lovers who take playlists seriously. To date, users have created nearly 9 billion playlists on Spotify, and this new feature gives them even more creative control.

Custom transitions join a growing set of personalization tools, including options to sort and edit playlists, snooze tracks, fine-tune Discover Weekly, and even get song suggestions from the AI DJ. It also puts Spotify in direct competition with Apple Music’s AutoMix, currently in iOS 26 beta, which promises a similar “DJ-like” experience.

Premium users with access to transitions can save their mixed playlists, share them on social media, or invite friends to collaborate on them. The feature can also be toggled off with a single tap if you’d prefer a traditional playlist experience for casual listening.

Spotify recommends using the feature with genres like house or techno, where tracks are naturally designed to blend. But you can apply transitions to any playlist. Like other playlists, you can customize cover art and now even add special stickers and labels designed just for mixed playlists.

Custom transitions are rolling out now to most Premium users worldwide. Some markets in the APAC region will get the feature later. For now, make sure your iOS app is updated to see the new option.
