As the new Administration of Donald Trump starts to suspend student visas without warning or justification, international students all throughout the United States are suddenly facing the possibility of deportation.
Students and institutions are in disbelief as universities report a dramatic increase in the SEVIS terminations, the government system that checks student visa status.
A lot of students get unexpected emails informing them that their SEVIS Records have been canceled. According to college administrators, they were not notified in advance, which caused anxiety and confusion.
Five international students were affected at Minnesota State University, and university officials didn’t learn about the problem until a Turkish student was arrested at another institution. While some people had no known transgressions, others received citations for minor driving infractions.
Students at prestigious colleges including Cornell, Arizona State, the University of Texas, and University of North Carolina State have also experienced visa rejections. Some were even taken into custody before official notifications reached institutions.

According to immigration lawyer Rajiv Khanna, visa revocations are occurring on ambiguous legal grounds, such as a provision referring to “foreign policy implications.” He criticized the absence of openness as well as the process.
Javier Reyes, the president of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, described the abrupt cancellation as “alarming,” claiming that they damage the US’s standing in the world of education. Universities are already rushing to assist impacted students who may have to leave or face legal issues due to the lack of clarification from government departments.
