The peer to peer UPI (India’s Unified Payments Interface) feature for WhatsApp has been rolled out in India. Initially under test on Android platform, the feature is now rolled out for both iOS and Android WhatsApp users in the country.
This feature will let Indian WhatsApp users send and receive money with a simple click of the button. The terms and service, privacy policy page is also updated about this feature on WhatsApp website however, the FAQ is still not updated.
WhatsApp has partnered with ICICI Bank for enabling UPI payments. Payments on WhatsApp will appear in users settings and users who want to send/receive money on WhatsApp will have to accept the terms and conditions, verify their mobile number from SMS (text message).
Banks like HDFC, Axis, ICICI, SBI, Yes Bank, Allahabad Bank, Punjab National Bank are on the list of partners for UPI on WhatsApp.
Users will only be able to send the payment on WhatsApp if the other user has Payments enabled in their settings.
WhatsApp has roughly about 1.5 billion monthly active users all over the world and Indian WhatsApp users are around 200 million in the country. The service is currently available in 10 Indian languages.
