In the latest iOS beta version 25.11.10.72, available via the TestFlight Beta Program, WhatsApp is continuing its efforts to introduce username support.
WhatsApp is currently developing a feature that will alert members in a chat anytime someone changes, adds, or removes their username, even though the option to choose a username is still in the early stages of development.
This will make it simpler to keep track of who is who by displaying a system-generated notice in your conversation each time a contact or group member modifies their username. The intention is to increase dialogue’s transparency and clarity to lessen misunderstanding and stop mimicry.
WhatsApp has been working on this feature for Android too (first spotted in the 2.25.4.11 beta), and it’s good to see iOS getting the same treatment. As shown in the preview screenshot, these username update notifications will appear directly inside your chats, so you’re always in the loop.

The notifications won’t be optional, meaning you won’t be able to turn them off. That’s probably intentional, to make sure everyone stays informed when usernames change. It’s also a subtle way to encourage users to be more mindful when switching up their display names.

This feature could be especially useful when dealing with unknown users or in group chats where identity clarity matters. If someone suddenly changes their username to something completely different, this alert system gives you a heads-up, helping you spot anything that feels off. While it’s not a full security feature, it adds a helpful layer of awareness.
There’s no official release date yet, but it’s clear that WhatsApp is actively building toward better username support. We’ll keep an eye out and share any new updates as soon as they drop!
