Together with Oracle and Softbank, OpenAI intends to spend $100 billion (£81 billion) instantly on computing facilities that would support artificial intelligence (AI).
President of the United States Donald Trump recognized the initiative as a “strong statement of belief in America’s potential” while surrounded by the executives of all three businesses at the White House.
In the past, OpenAI has asked for government approval of such objectives and demanded significant infrastructure spending to assist AI.
Softbank & OpenAI’s $500B AI Project
According to Softbank and the founder of ChatGPT, their joint venture, called the “Stargate”, plans to spend $500 billion over the following 4 years.
“I hope this is going to be the single most significant work of this period,” stated “Sam Altman“, the CEO of OpenAI. “We wouldn’t have been able to accomplish this without you as well, Mr. President,” he said, giving Donald credit even though the task was complete. Donald claims that the proposal, which calls for building data centers and other AI infrastructure, will generate over 100,000 new employment.
The first data centers are underway in the state of Texas, and others will be developed in various places, according to Larry Ellison, Chief technology officer (CTO), of Oracle. The initiative was initially covered by technological news site Newsweek in March of the previous year.
Funding for OpenAI
According to OpenAI, the introduction of the fresh firms, which also involves MGX, a shareholder funded by the UAE, was the result of discussions that lasted over a year. Softbank or OpenAI have stated that IT behemoths Microsoft, as well as Arm, and NVIDIA Corporation are also involved in the project. By the release of its ChatGPT bot in 2022, OpenAI launched the AI race, showcasing the technology’s fast advancements and providing realistic answers to queries. A rise in funding has resulted from it, especially in the specialized data centers required for the computation.
However, the planned spike in demand for the centers, which will require a lot of cash to build and a lot of electricity to operate, caused worries that energy supplies would be affected along with the involvement of foreign businesses. Past President Joe Biden proposed regulations to limit the export of AI-related chips to dozens of nations worldwide as one of his last actions as president, claiming that the action would help US industrial management.
Additionally, he issued directives pertaining to the construction of data centers on public property, emphasizing the need of renewable energy in supplying electricity to the facilities. The majority of OpenAI’s biggest supporters, Microsoft, stated just recently that it was on pace to invest $80 billion this year to construct data centers driven by AI.
Additionally, it is part of a $100 billion effort that focuses on investing in AI infrastructure and involves Blackstone. Similar levels of investment have been made by Amazon, which in the last two months alone has announced two initiatives totaling almost $10 billion each.
According to a McKinsey study from the previous year, the need for data center capacities will be more than high globally by the year 2030, increasing by 19% to 27% yearly.
