OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging. This is a smartphone camera technology maker. The deal is reportedly worth more than $300 million. That’s according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Glass Imaging was founded in 2019. The company is based in Los Altos, California. It had previously raised roughly $30 million in funding from investors.
Glass Imaging was founded by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop. Both are former Apple engineers. They previously led the team that developed Apple’s Portrait Mode feature. This background directly shapes their current work at Glass Imaging.

Glass Imaging works differently. The company uses neural networks to learn about individual camera systems. That includes the different camera setups across various smartphone models. This approach produces better images from the moment the shutter actually clicks.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this acquisition. The ChatGPT maker is widely rumored to be developing its own hardware. That includes smartphones. It includes earbuds too. AI companion devices are reportedly part of these plans as well.
Back in 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and famed Apple designer Jony Ive made a joint announcement. They revealed they had been working together on a device startup. That startup was called io. This announcement came when OpenAI acquired Ive’s company. The acquisition was valued at $6.5 billion at the time.
