Meta shared major news on Tuesday. This came alongside its new AI-focused subscription plans announcement. The company said it will now let AI agents set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging directly. This service lets companies connect with customers through WhatsApp conversations.
According to Meta, this process was previously fairly cumbersome. Developers needed to move between several different tools and services. That included the Developer Console. It included Meta’s Business Manager.
The API reference was involved too. Developers also had to work within their own code editor. Now, the process works differently. Developers can simply ask their preferred AI agent to handle setup. They just describe what needs to be done through chat.
This new capability comes from a specific tool. It’s called the WhatsApp Business Tools MCP. This is an MCP, or Model Context Protocol, server. It directly connects an AI coding agent to the WhatsApp Business Platform. That includes agents like Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT.
This move expands Meta’s existing lineup of MCP servers significantly. Previously, these servers focused on managing ads. They also handled monitoring app configurations and other social technologies. Now, Meta has one specifically designed for a new purpose. It helps onboard businesses to WhatsApp directly.

Many other tech companies offer similar MCP servers too. These let AI agents securely interact with various services. That includes PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google, and Microsoft, among others.
In Meta’s specific case, the AI agent handles significant busywork. This applies throughout the WhatsApp Business setup process. That includes creating the company’s WhatsApp Business account. It includes adding and verifying a phone number. The agent can also register the business for Cloud API access. It checks the business’s Terms of Service too, along with other setup tasks.
Businesses gain access to additional AI agent capabilities beyond initial setup. They can describe a messaging template they want created. The AI then builds that template accordingly. Businesses can also have the agent edit existing templates as needed.
On top of that, they can test messages and webhooks directly. The agent can monitor things that may have previously failed quietly. That includes Terms of Service issues. It includes payment method problems. Business Verification concerns fall into this category too.
During setup and configuration, businesses have another resource available. Meta’s other MCP server, called Meta Social Technologies MCP, can help further. It can discover relevant API endpoints. It can search documentation as needed. It also helps troubleshoot errors that come up, according to the company.
