The AI model wars continue right now. Anthropic has released the newest version of Sonnet. That’s the company’s mid-tier model. According to Anthropic, this new version works much faster. It also costs significantly less than its predecessor.
The lab describes Sonnet 5.5 as an ideal assistant for everyday tasks. That includes coding work. It also includes creating office documents efficiently.
Sonnet 5, this model’s predecessor, was announced about three months ago. At the time, its main selling point centered on efficient agentic deployment. Specifically, it could run AI agents at a lower cost than competitors offered.
With 5.5, the big selling point has shifted to speed instead. Anthropic claims Sonnet 5.5 runs 30% faster than its predecessor. The company also says its token consumption rate is significantly slower now.
Within Anthropic’s model hierarchy, Sonnet sits below the Opus model in raw power. Still, Sonnet can prove more useful in certain situations. That’s largely due to its agility. Anthropic’s own benchmarks show something interesting here.
Sonnet 5.5 actually performs better than Opus 5.5 on agentic coding tasks. This likely happens because Sonnet can spawn multiple agents. It does this without exceeding cost limits in the process.
Sonnet 5.5 also comes with notable cyber capabilities, according to the company. Anthropic claims these capabilities are “comparable” to those found in Opus 5. As a result, this marks a first for the Sonnet line. 5.5 is the first Sonnet model subject to the same cyber safeguards. These same safeguards already apply to Fable and Opus.
Anthropic also plans to release a new version of Haiku soon. That’s the company’s smallest model overall. Still, the company hasn’t given a firm date for this release. It’s expected sometime in the coming weeks.
The past year has brought a flurry of new model releases across the industry. Major AI labs have been especially active recently. Just last week, OpenAI released several new models. That includes enhanced versions of Sol and Luna.
These represent OpenAI’s mid-tier and budget-friendly model options. Meta also announced a new model recently. According to the company, this model will power an upcoming feature. That feature is tied to Meta’s smart glasses products.
