AMD is acquiring World Labs. That’s one of the leading developers of deep learning models. These models are specifically designed to understand physical reality. The deal is valued at $8.2 billion. Both companies announced this acquisition today.
World Labs explained the reasoning behind this deal in a statement. AI development requires “close collaboration across model research, systems and compute.” AMD offered its own perspective too. The company says understanding frontier workloads, like those created at World Labs, will shape its chip-making roadmap going forward.
This acquisition includes a notable leadership move. World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li will join AMD directly. She’ll serve as executive vice president and chief scientist. AMD and World Labs already had a close relationship.
They formed an inference optimization-and-training partnership last year. Ties between the two companies have remained strong since then. Notably, Li appeared as a guest at AMD’s CES presentation earlier this year.

Li is a Stanford computer science professor. She’s widely considered a pioneer in AI, particularly in computer vision. Her work building the ImageNet database helped establish this reputation. That database also inspired numerous AI competitions over the years.
In 2024, Li founded World Labs. Her goal was developing deep learning models with a stronger grasp of the physical world. She argued that true general intelligence requires physical grounding. Models need the ability to understand and reason about data beyond text alone.
In a post announcing this deal, Li described the partnership’s origins. It stemmed from a desire to scale World Labs’ technical breakthroughs beyond the lab setting. “Now that we have tangible proof of the possibilities, we want to do everything we can to accelerate the future,” Li wrote. “To do this requires scaling our efforts, widening our reach, and getting closer to the hardware.”
The term “world model” remains loosely defined across the industry. It encompasses a wide range of technologies. That includes language models trained to understand visual inputs. It also includes models capable of generating and sustaining high-fidelity simulations of reality.
World Labs’ first product is called Marble. It’s pitched as a tool for creating entertainment experiences. It also serves another purpose: creating simulated environments for robot training.
This acquisition will likely help AMD compete more effectively. Specifically, it targets long-standing rival Nvidia. Both companies are racing to build an ecosystem around AI-specific chips.
Nvidia already offers a suite of open-weight world models. That includes its Cosmos platform. By comparison, AMD has only offered text- and video-based models publicly until now.

World models are seen as genuinely vital for a specific purpose. They help deploy generative AI models on robotic platforms. That spans autonomous vehicles, industrial robots, and general-purpose humanoids too. There’s a specific reason these models matter so much.
Real-world data for training general-purpose robots remains scarce. Because of this, synthetic data from world models will be key. This data helps realize the broader vision pushed forward by companies like Tesla and Figure.
This acquisition is expected to close before the end of the year. That timeline remains subject to regulatory approval.
