Anthropic Upgrades Claude Voice Mode With Smarter AI Models

Weeks after OpenAI introduced new conversational AI models and upgraded ChatGPT’s voice mode, Anthropic has announced its own update for Claude.

The company said on Thursday that users can now choose between the Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models when using Claude’s voice mode.

Claude’s voice feature launched last year. It originally ran only on the Haiku model. While it delivered fast responses, it was not designed for more complex tasks.

With the latest update, that changes.

Anthropic said voice mode will now use the last AI model selected in a text conversation. It will automatically switch to the fastest version of that model during voice chats.

The company says the upgrade is better suited for longer conversations. Users can ask for feedback on their communication skills. They can also practice client presentations or brainstorm product ideas and market research.

Claude’s voice mode can now connect with other apps as well.

It supports Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva, and Notion. Users can update calendar events, draft emails, or create documents in Notion using voice commands.

This gives Claude an advantage over OpenAI’s voice mode.

While OpenAI improved the way ChatGPT speaks, its voice mode still cannot use multiple apps to complete tasks.

Earlier this year, Anthropic also added multilingual support to Claude’s voice mode in beta.

Users can now speak in several languages. However, they must manually select the language before starting a conversation.

The supported languages include English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish.

The updated voice mode is now available in beta for all users across supported platforms.

Free users have some limitations. They can only use the Haiku model. They are also limited to connecting one app at a time.

Anthropic did not announce any changes to the underlying voice technology. The company also did not reveal which voice system powers Claude.

As a result, users may not notice improvements in conversation quality. Features like smoother interruptions and more natural voice interactions, introduced by OpenAI, are not part of this update.
