AWS Introduces Amazon Connect Health, an AI Agent Platform for Healthcare

Aws introduces amazon connect health

Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched Amazon Connect Health, a new AI agent–supported platform Thursday that aims to help healthcare organizations automate everyday administrative tasks. The goal of the system is to decrease the amount of time clinicians spend on redundant tasks like scheduling appointments, entering information in the EHR, verifying patients, and managing medical records.

Healthcare providers frequently have heavy administrative burdens, forcing time away from patient care. Through Amazon Connect Health, AWS aims to simplify those tasks with AI-powered software agents that can do some of the more involved work normally done by medical staff.

HIPAA-Eligible Platform With EHR Integration

Amazon Connect Health is HIPAA-eligible, according to AWS, which means it is ready for use in environments that handle sensitive medical data under very strict privacy regulations. We designed the platform to sit natively within EHR systems, allowing health providers to access and update patient information in their usual workflows.

Those capabilities enable healthcare organizations to use the platform without having to redevelop their technology infrastructure, AWS said, adding that it already supports several EHR providers, data integration services, and patient engagement platforms.

AWS Building Out Its Healthcare Portfolio

The launch is a reflection of AWS’s increasing interest in the enormous U.S. healthcare industry, which is worth about $5 trillion. In recent years, the company has methodically rolled out services focused on health care.

AWS, for instance, introduced a natural language processing engine called Amazon Comprehend Medical in 2018 that is specifically intended to read unstructured medical text. In 2021, the company launched Amazon HealthLake, a cloud-based data platform that enables organizations to store and organize health information in accordance with healthcare interoperability standards known as FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources).

In 2022, AWS spun up a new platform called AWS HealthOmics, designed around genomics and bioinformatics workflows for healthcare and life sciences organizations.

Where those products primarily addressed the processing and storage of data, Amazon Connect Health is AWS’s first major offering with a focus on AI agents—software systems that can autonomously perform tasks while remaining compliant with healthcare rules.

AI Agents Built to Help Reduce Administrative Burden

The platform integrates with current clinical software to support day-to-day administrative exercises. Those AI agents can assist with tasks, including the following, according to AWS:

  • Reviewing patient medical histories
  • Generating clinical documentation
  • Assisting with medical coding
  • Managing provider administrative workflows

The platform provides capabilities for patient verification and ambient clinical documentation at launch. Other tools, like appointment scheduling and patient insights, are available only in preview today. AWS claims that medical coding automation and other advanced features will be rolled out to customers in future updates.

Pricing and Usage

The platform will be priced at $99 a month, per user, supporting as many as 600 patient encounters each month, AWS said. For context, the company said most primary care physicians typically conduct about 300 encounters per month, so the system could easily manage an average provider’s workload.

An AWS spokesperson did not immediately respond with further details on testing programs or rollout timelines when contacted for comment.

Amazon’s Broader Healthcare Strategy

Beyond its cloud services, Amazon has made several big moves into health care in the past decade.

Amazon expanded into the digital pharmacy market when it acquired PillPack in 2018 for about $1 billion. In 2022, the company acquired One Medical for $3.9 billion, placing Amazon in the primary health care services space as a direct player.

Following the acquisition, Amazon has folded these businesses into its ecosystem—launching services like same-day prescription delivery and virtual doctor appointments, including telehealth specials for children.

Health Care Burnout Is Targeted by AI Startups and Big Tech

Alleviating administrative burnout for healthcare workers with AI has become a major area of interest among both startups and large technology companies.

Startups like Regard use AI to read patient records and automatically generate notes for doctors during appointments. A company called Notable handles patient intake forms, scheduling, and communication in all ways to reduce administrative burdens.

Big AI developers are also getting into the healthcare game. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health earlier this year—a specialized version of its popular chatbot that aims to answer health-related queries. Soon after, Anthropic unveiled Claude for Healthcare with tools for both patients and medical practitioners.

Amazon Connect Health, unlike consumer-oriented AI health assistants, is designed to work in HIPAA-compliant clinical environments like hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare providers that are required to comply with strict privacy laws by U.S. federal law under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.
