Blue Origin has started construction on a second orbital launch pad at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, less than three months after one of its New Glenn rockets was destroyed in a pad explosion. The company confirmed on August 14, 2026 that the original Launch Complex 36 has been renamed Launch Complex 36A and that a new pad, Launch Complex 36B, is now being built to fly a larger version of the rocket called New Glenn 9×4. Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, has not given a completion date for the new pad or a first launch date for the bigger vehicle.
The announcement is a notable turn for a program that looked badly damaged in late May, when a New Glenn vehicle exploded during a routine engine test and took critical ground infrastructure with it.
What Happened at Launch Complex 36
New Glenn was destroyed on May 28, 2026 during a static fire test at Launch Complex 36, which at the time was the rocket’s only operational pad. The blast also wrecked pad hardware including the lightning tower and the transporter-erector used to move the vehicle from its integration building and raise it upright.
Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp said in an update posted on August 5 that the failure has been traced to a specific component. According to Limp, the anomaly originated at the main oxygen valve on one of the BE-4 engines, a finding later confirmed through hardware recovery and inspections. He added that component level and engine hotfire tests have been run to understand the failure mode and shape the fixes. Spaceflight Now reported the same root cause finding.
Two Pads Instead of One
Rather than simply rebuilding what was lost, Blue Origin is splitting Launch Complex 36 into two pads with different jobs. Pad 36A will serve the current New Glenn 7×2 configuration. Pad 36B is being built for the New Glenn 9×4, a considerably larger vehicle.
The naming is straightforward once you know the convention: the numbers refer to engine counts. The 7×2 uses seven BE-4 engines on its first stage and two BE-3U engines on its second stage. The 9×4 uses nine BE-4 Block 2 engines on the booster and four BE-3U engines up top. Blue Origin says the 9×4 booster produces more than 5.7 million pounds of thrust, roughly 50 percent more than the 7×2 booster, and that the vehicle can carry 70 metric tons to low Earth orbit, 14 metric tons direct to geostationary orbit, and 20 metric tons on a trans lunar injection. The company has published the details in its own announcement on returning Launch Complex 36 to two pads.
The target customers for that extra capacity are large commercial satellite constellations, lunar and deep space missions, and national security payloads. In other words, the segment where SpaceX currently has very little serious competition.
Why This Story Is Worth Your Attention
Strip away the rocket hardware and this is a case study in how serious operations respond to a public failure. Three things stand out.
First, they found the actual cause instead of guessing. A single valve on a single engine. That level of specificity only comes from instrumenting your system heavily enough that you can reconstruct what went wrong. Most people running a business or a freelance practice do the opposite after a failure: they form a story quickly and move on without ever isolating the real fault.
Second, they did not rebuild the same thing. The obvious move after losing a pad is to restore it exactly as it was. Blue Origin instead used the rebuild as a chance to change how the rocket is assembled and raised, and to add capacity for a vehicle that did not exist on the original blueprint. A setback became a reason to redesign rather than a reason to retreat.
Third, they kept a public timeline. The company said early on that it intended to fly New Glenn again before the end of 2026, and it has kept publishing progress updates rather than going quiet. That is uncomfortable, and it is also how credibility gets rebuilt.
None of this guarantees the comeback works. Launch vehicles are unforgiving and expensive, and Blue Origin has not committed to a date for the 9×4. But the pattern is worth copying at any scale: find the real cause, rebuild better than before, and say out loud what you are doing.
