The fastest-growing skill in Upwork’s customer service and admin support category for 2026 is ecommerce management, up 130% year over year, and it carries no AI label at all. It grew close to three times faster than the next skill in the same category, medical virtual assistance at 44%, while also sitting inside the ten most in-demand skills there. For anyone who has been told the only growth left in freelancing is AI work, that pairing of speed and existing volume is the more useful signal.
The figure comes from Upwork’s sixth annual In-Demand Skills report, released on 4 February 2026.
The number and where it comes from
Upwork’s In-Demand Skills 2026 release lists ecommerce management at the top of the fastest-growing skills in Customer Service and Admin Support, ahead of medical virtual assistance (+44%) and supply chain and logistics project management (+37%).
The methodology is narrower than the headline suggests, and knowing its limits helps you judge it. Skills data comes from the Upwork Marketplace, based on freelancer earnings across six work categories between 1 January and 31 December 2025, with demand originating in the United States. Only completed jobs are counted, and each listed skill had at least USD 100,000 in aggregate freelancer earnings in its category over the period. Growth compares 2025 earnings against the same period in 2024. The full report carries a more comprehensive list.
So this measures money that actually moved on one platform for US clients. It is not a survey of what buyers say they intend to hire. That makes it a stronger signal than most trend lists and a narrower one than a global market read.
Why growth and volume together matter more than growth alone
A skill that grows quickly from a tiny base is a niche, and it can stay a niche. A skill with heavy volume and flat growth is a commodity where you compete mainly on price. The interesting position is a skill that appears on both lists.
Ecommerce management does. It is first among the fastest-growing skills in its category and eighth among that category’s ten most in-demand skills. Compare that with AI video generation and editing, which grew a striking 329% in Design and Creative but does not appear in that category’s top ten most in-demand skills, where graphic design and video editing lead. Both are real opportunities. They are different shapes of opportunity, and the second one asks you to bet on a market that is still forming.
What the work actually involves
Ecommerce management is store operations rather than store creation. A freelancer in this role typically handles product listings and catalogue data, inventory accuracy, order and returns processing, supplier and fulfilment coordination, marketplace account health on platforms like Amazon, eBay, Etsy or Shopify, pricing and promotion calendars, escalated customer queries, and regular reporting to the owner.
The through line is that a store keeps running and keeps selling while the owner does something else. That is a different sale from building the storefront, which sits in Upwork’s coding category as ecommerce website development.
How this differs from general virtual assistance
General virtual assistance remains the single most in-demand skill in the same category, so this is not a case of one replacing the other. The difference is in how the work is defined.
VA work is usually scoped as tasks: handle the inbox, schedule these calls, update this sheet. Ecommerce management is scoped as a surface you own: the store stays healthy, listings stay accurate, orders go out, the account does not get suspended. Owning an outcome rather than a task list changes the pricing conversation, because you are no longer selling hours that a client can mentally compare against an hourly rate elsewhere. If you are working out what to charge, our simple pricing formula for freelance rates is a reasonable starting point for structuring a retainer.
Is this a realistic step up from VA work?
For someone already doing virtual assistance, it is one of the shorter jumps available. The entry cost is platform familiarity and operational discipline rather than a new technical discipline, which is what makes it different from pivoting into, say, AI integration work. Anyone currently building VA skills can read our beginner’s guide to freelance virtual assistant work as the layer underneath this one.
The harder part is evidence. Clients handing over a live storefront are handing over revenue, and they screen for that. One real store you have managed end to end, with a documented account of what you changed and what happened to a metric you can name, does more than a list of tools on a profile. If you have no client yet, running a small store of your own is a legitimate way to generate that evidence.
Where the risk sits
Not all ecommerce work is equally durable, and Fiverr’s recent results show which end is exposed. Fiverr reported second quarter 2026 revenue of USD 97.8 million, down 10% year over year, with management attributing the decline to compression in high-volume, low-value transactional work as AI automates simple tasks. In the same results, work priced above USD 1,000 accounted for about 15% of gross order value and grew 13%.
Bulk listing uploads, product data entry and copy-paste catalogue work sit squarely in the compressing half. The judgment layer does not: deciding which SKUs to discontinue, diagnosing why conversion dropped on a category page, handling a suspension appeal, negotiating with a supplier who missed a shipment. If you enter this field, enter at the layer that requires you to make decisions and be accountable for them.
Upwork’s own framing points the same way. The company reported that 77% of business leaders in an October 2025 survey of 349 leaders said AI is increasing their need for specialised, fractional talent rather than traditional full-time roles.
Positioning yourself for the work
Pick one platform and learn its rules properly, particularly its account health and policy compliance mechanics, since that knowledge is what clients cannot easily replace. Package the offer as a monthly retainer tied to store outcomes rather than an hourly rate tied to tasks. Build one documented case study before you chase volume, and write it around a metric rather than a description of duties.
The wider point in Upwork’s data is that the growth is not confined to skills with AI in the name. It is showing up in operational roles where someone has to hold a business together while the tooling underneath changes, and that has been a reliable place to stand for a long time.
