Figma introduces new capabilities to shape how AI agents operate on its platform

Figma announced a new Markdown-based editor at its first Config event in India. The tool helps teams define a company’s design. It also brings in design and code libraries. It integrates with the Payload headless content management system too. Figma wants its own agents, and third-party ones, to follow a brand’s design rules more closely when they create with AI.

What Figma Specs Does

The new feature is called Figma Specs. It’s a markdown editor. Users describe their design language in a simple way. The document then serves as a reference for teams and agents working in Figma.

Specs can live as a standalone file. They can also sit inside the canvas. The editor does more than handle text. Users can reference other Figma elements. That includes items on the canvas. They can also embed FigJam diagrams, code layers, and designs.

Central Context for the Design System

Teams can add more context to the design system. That includes design libraries, code libraries, and guidelines. Agents can check this central source. They then follow the rules it sets.

Steering AI Toward Predictable Results

Figma recently widened access to its agent on canvas. AI is non-deterministic. It can give different results each time. So Figma is adding tools that push it toward more predictable outcomes.

Code Layers Move to Public Beta

Figma also expanded its code layers feature. This feature adds code to designs on the canvas. It helps teams build more interactive prototypes. The company announced it in private beta in June. At the India event this week, it moved to public beta. More users can now test it.

Users can also ask the agent to turn a design into code. They can ask it to change part of the code too. That makes it easier to iterate on a prototype.

Why Building Has Changed

“We see Figma as the place where software teams come to decide what they build and ship,” said chief design officer Loredana Crisan. “And so for that, I think one of the key things to keep in mind about what AI has changed and what it made available is the ability to build.”

She shared a striking comparison. “There are 17 times more lines of code being produced today than in the past. But when you’re looking at releases, only 1.3 times more releases. A lot of that code actually is not necessarily built to ship but really built to discover what the product is. It’s built to design.”

In other words, people use code to explore ideas. Most of it never reaches users. That’s why design tools matter more now.

New MCP Support

Figma also supports more than 20 new tools through its MCP. That includes Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and the Indian AI startup Sarvam.

Payload and Figma Make

Last year, Figma acquired Payload, an open-source headless CMS. The company is now integrating it with Figma Make. That product generates dynamic websites. The integration lets users manage content directly. Figma says Payload’s downloads have grown sixfold in the last 12 months.

Why India Matters

Figma opened its first India office late last year. The office handles sales, partnerships, go-to-market, and product support. Figma says India is its biggest market for users outside the United States. The platform works with 40% of India’s top 100 companies on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

What This Means

Figma is trying to give AI clear rules to follow. A shared, readable document lets people and agents work from the same source. That may reduce off-brand results. It may also save teams from repeated corrections.
