Generative AI is pulling freelance income in two directions at once. Low-complexity tasks such as basic copy edits and simple coding are losing rate power, while work that involves directing, checking and integrating AI output is gaining it. The freelancers earning more are not the ones avoiding the tools, they are the ones packaging judgment around them, much the same shift behind moving clients onto retainers.
With generative AI, low-complexity tasks are being replaced on freelance platforms, and demand for AI-related jobs is rising. According to recently published Upwork statistics, which Axios highlighted, freelancers with AI skills are making more money than those without.
AI Freelance Income Increases
Over the previous year, freelancers in AI-related disciplines enjoyed a 25% increase in pay. Higher salaries are earned by those that incorporate AI into their current skill set, such as machine learning specialists or graphic artists who use generative tools. According to the survey, jobs related to AI often pay more than 40% more per hour than those unrelated to AI.

According to Kelly Monahan, managing director at the Upwork Research Institute, integrating AI tools into workflows is most advantageous for people who already possess domain expertise.
Augmentation Outpaces Automation
Even with AI’s explosive growth, most companies are still wary of complete automation. Employers favor humans who use AI as a support tool over fully automated operations, according to research from Upwork. There are more than twice as many workers using AI to supplement their jobs as there are attempting complete automation.

This is consistent with previous Anthropic findings that showed AI is still perceived as a tool that needs human supervision. According to reports, managers have greater faith in people collaborating with AI than in autonomous AI systems.
Basic Coding Demand Declines
According to Upwork’s analysis, there is still a need for skilled developers for more complex projects even while there is less need for simple, repetitive coding. Compared to late 2022, around the time ChatGPT began, freelancers who have projects that require coding for at least 25% of their work now make 11% more.
Meanwhile, “vibe coding” is becoming more and more popular. A new type of generalist who can design and code with AI support is made possible by this technique, which uses AI to produce code without the need for extensive technical understanding.
