Meta is bringing its AI assistant to Threads in a bigger way.
Starting Monday, users can chat with Meta AI directly inside Threads’ direct messages. The new feature gives people a private way to ask questions, get recommendations, and keep a conversation going without ever leaving the app.
Up until now, Meta AI on Threads was mostly a public thing. In some countries, people could tag the chatbot in posts, kind of like how folks interact with Grok on X. This update takes that a step further and moves it into private chats.
Private AI Conversations
The new feature lives inside Threads’ DMs.
Users can message Meta AI the same way they’d message any other contact — asking questions, brainstorming ideas, or picking up a conversation right where they left off, all in private.
The chatbot also keeps track of context from earlier messages, so conversations feel less choppy and more like a real back-and-forth.

Share Content Directly With Meta AI
Meta AI can now work with content shared inside Threads itself.
Users can send over posts, photos, videos, links, and other content straight to the chatbot. Meta AI can break down a post, answer questions about whatever was shared, or add extra context around it.
The company says you can keep asking follow-up questions too, so the conversation doesn’t have to end after one reply.
Meta Wants Users to Stay Inside Its Apps
This is really part of Meta’s bigger AI game plan.
By building Meta AI right into Threads, the company is hoping people will lean on its own assistant rather than hopping over to something like ChatGPT or Google Gemini.
Meta AI is already baked into Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, so adding Threads to the mix just rounds out that ecosystem even more.
The thinking is pretty straightforward: put AI wherever people already are.

Public AI Features Are Still Being Tested
Private chats aren’t the end of it, though.
Meta says it’s still testing Meta AI inside Threads’ public feeds in a handful of countries, letting users interact with the chatbot right from public posts.
The company says it’s watching how people respond before deciding whether to roll that out more broadly.
For anyone who’d rather see less AI, Meta has built in some controls. You can mute @meta.ai, mark AI posts as “Not Interested,” or hide AI-generated replies that show up under your own posts.
A Bigger Role for AI on Threads
All of this points to how central AI has become to Meta’s plans across its apps.
Rather than switching over to another app to ask something or look something up, Threads users can now just turn to Meta AI without breaking their scroll.
As AI assistants show up more and more across social platforms, Meta seems to be pushing Threads to be more than just a place to post and chat. The goal is for it to double as a spot for search, recommendations, and everyday help — all without leaving the app.
