Amazon has opened its largest campus to date in Hyderabad, India. Amazon has invested in India because India is one of the emerging e-commerce markets. According to Engadget, the amazing campus spreads over 9.5 acres with 1.8 million sq ft of office space. There is space for about 15,000 employees to work in the building.
The decision was made because 62,000 employees in India are located in Hyderabad.
“It is also the largest technology base outside Seattle,” Amazon India senior VP and country manager Amit Agarwal told the Times of India. “The employees include software development engineers, machine learning scientists, product managers, finance and many other functions.”
The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Wednesday. This move comes months after the Seattle-based company scrapped plans for building a major outpost in New York.
“The investment to create an office of this size indicates that we are going to continue to grow,” Amazon India country manager Amit Agarwal told Reuters on Wednesday.
Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos has already committed an investment of $5 billion for India operations. The company wants to compete Walmart Inc’s e-commerce unit Flipkart.
