WhatsApp Freelance Scam Alert by National CERT Pakistan

There has been a concerning rise in social engineering assaults that pose as freelance job openings, according to an urgent alert sent by Pakistan’s National Cyber Emergency Response Team (National CERT).

The schemes, which are mostly disseminated via messaging applications like WhatsApp, entail con artists enticing people especially young people, students, and independent contractors into groups where they must endure obscene material, pressure, and, in the end, blackmail.

These schemes, which fall under the category of “honey trap” scams, are allegedly becoming more common, especially in Punjab.

The National CERT claims that attackers add potential victims to WhatsApp groups that appear to be professional while posing as recruiters or agents of reputable freelance platforms. Fake members are frequently added to these organizations in order to give them respectability. Once inside, victims can come upon pornographic material.

Unknowingly implicating themselves, those who react or try to report such material are then coerced into forwarding it. Impersonators acting as law enforcement officers then call them and threaten to take legal action unless they get substantial sums of money, between Rs. 1 and Rs. 1.5 million.

The warning describes the various dangers that these frauds present. Victims experience mental suffering, damage to their reputation, and unapproved usage of their digital identities in addition to financial extortion. Attackers customize their attacks by taking advantage of identities, WhatsApp display photos, and social media activities.

The issue is a cybersecurity and social danger as it affects not just people but also their families and professional networks.

The advice claims that a mix of human behavior and technological flaws makes these frauds more likely to succeed. Common problems include the possibility to be joined to groups without authorization, the public disclosure of personal information in group chats, and a general lack of understanding regarding digital safety.

WhatsApp Freelance Scam

Many users, particularly young job searchers, are more vulnerable since they interact with unwanted work offers on unofficial platforms rather than on reputable freelance websites.

The National CERT Portal suggests a number of precautions. Users are advised to change their messaging app privacy settings, stay away from unidentified employment offers, and quit any group right once if they come across sexual material. Regardless of the intention, sharing or responding to such content should be avoided at all costs.

Using only trustworthy freelance sites, encouraging internet hygiene, and getting legal advice when needed are all stressed in the advice.

A copy of the advisory has been distributed to relevant institutions, digital platforms, and law enforcement agencies. Reporting incidents via the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency, the PTA complaint system, or the National CERT portal is encouraged for victims or witnesses of such scams.
