Anthropic’s AI chatbot Claude is having a breakout moment — and the timing is hard to ignore.

Amid a high-profile clash with the Pentagon, Claude has surged to No. 1 on Apple’s U.S. App Store, overtaking OpenAI’s ChatGPT and pushing Google’s Gemini further down the rankings. The app claimed the top spot on Saturday and continued to hold it into Sunday, according to app store data first highlighted by CNBC.

Just weeks ago, Claude wasn’t even close to the top. Data from Sensor Tower shows the app ranked around No. 131 in January, spent much of February hovering in the top 20, and then climbed rapidly in recent days—moving from sixth to fourth and then to first within a matter of days.

The surge comes as Anthropic faces mounting political pressure.

The company had been negotiating with the Department of Defense while drawing firm lines around how its AI could be used. Specifically, Anthropic sought safeguards preventing its models from being deployed for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons.

That stance triggered a sharp response. President Donald Trump publicly criticized the company, calling its position a “disastrous mistake,” and directed federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s products. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth went further, recommending the company be labeled a “supply chain risk to national security,” a designation that could bar U.S. defense contractors from using its AI tools.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei pushed back, emphasizing the value Claude provides to the armed forces and urging officials to reconsider the classification.

Meanwhile, rival OpenAI moved quickly to secure its own Pentagon agreement. CEO Sam Altman said that the deal includes safeguards related to domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons — though it has sparked its own debate.

For Anthropic, the controversy appears to have translated into momentum.

A company spokesperson said daily sign-ups have broken records every day this week. Free users are up more than 60% since January, and paid subscriptions have more than doubled since the beginning of this year. Sensor Tower data also indicates daily downloads have tripled since November.

Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic has increasingly positioned Claude as a serious contender in enterprise AI, especially for coding and business use cases. As competition intensifies, OpenAI has responded by deepening partnerships with consulting giants like Accenture and Capgemini.

For now, at least, the Pentagon dispute hasn’t slowed Claude down. If anything, it’s propelled the chatbot straight to the top of the charts.
