OpenAI is making a big change to ChatGPT. The company is removing limits on text-based chats for all users. This applies across the platform. OpenAI announced the update today. It comes shortly after ChatGPT crossed a major milestone. The platform recently passed 1 billion weekly users.
A new model will power this expanded experience. It’s called GPT-5.6 Luna. This model will become the default for Free and Go users. It replaces the previous model, GPT-5.5.
Both Free and Go users are getting another new feature too. It’s called the “Think” button. This lets users choose higher reasoning power when tackling complex questions. OpenAI clarified that some limits will still apply elsewhere. Files, images, voice features, and image generation will continue to have separate usage limits.
Plus and Pro users are seeing changes as well. They’ll get access to an upgraded model called GPT-5.6 Sol. This version is designed for quick, everyday tasks. That includes answering questions, doing web research, offering advice, helping with planning, assisting with writing, and supporting decision-making.
According to OpenAI, this updated model delivers more compact and reliable answers. It’s worth noting this is a separate model. It’s different from the GPT-5.6 Sol version used in Codex and Work, which remains unchanged for now.
Plus and Pro users are also getting a new tool called the thinking slider. This lets users control how much reasoning effort the model applies to a given answer. Users can adjust the slider based on how complex or multi-step their question is.

OpenAI shared results from internal testing. The company compared its new models against GPT-5.5-Instant. According to that evaluation, factual errors dropped significantly. Errors were 62% less common with GPT-5.6 Luna. They were 68% less common with GPT-5.6 Sol.
The rollout is happening in stages. The updated GPT-5.6 Sol model is already available today for Plus and Pro users. Other changes are coming soon for Free and Go users, arriving later this week. Next week, all users will gain two more features. That includes unlimited text chats. It also includes access to the new Think button for handling harder, more complex questions.
