Tesla and SpaceX made a major announcement on Thursday. The two companies are jointly developing an advanced chip factory called “Terafab.” They confirmed it will be built in Grimes County, Texas, just outside Houston. The initial investment for the project totals $16.8 billion.
Elon Musk, who serves as CEO of both companies, described the scale of the project in a post on Thursday. He called it the largest and most valuable building on Earth, by far. According to SpaceX, the facility is planned to include more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space.
The companies say the factory will create significant local jobs. They expect to employ at least 3,000 people, drawing workers from both Grimes County and nearby Brazos County.
SpaceX described the purpose of the facility in a post on its website. The company called it an advanced semiconductor fab. Its goal is to bridge the gap between today’s global chip supply and future computing demand.
There’s a bigger vision driving this project. Musk has long described a future built around advanced automation. That includes millions of robots taking over human jobs. It includes robotaxis handling all driving tasks. It also includes satellites functioning as data centers for AI training and processing. All of this requires enormous computing power, far beyond what current chip production can support.

SpaceX has hinted at just how large this investment could grow. In regulatory filings, the company suggested it may ultimately spend as much as $119 billion on the project. That spending would happen across a multi-phase construction plan. Interestingly, SpaceX didn’t mention Terafab at all during its first earnings call earlier this week.
Intel is also involved in the project. The chipmaker has confirmed it will contribute to Terafab. However, Intel has stayed vague about the exact scope of its involvement.
SpaceX offered more detail about the facility’s design and ambition on its website. The company described Terafab as epic in both mission and scale. It’s meant to build new computing capacity at an unprecedented pace and size. The plan calls for a vertically integrated factory. That means manufacturing, packaging, and testing of advanced logic and memory chips will all happen under one roof.
SpaceX explained why that integration matters. Bringing all these functions into one location should allow for faster, recursive improvements. It should also speed up how quickly new computing power gets deployed. According to the company, Terafab will produce chips built specifically for edge computing and inference tasks. Those chips are intended for use in hardware like Tesla’s Optimus robots and self-driving Cybercabs. The facility will also produce high-power chips designed to run SpaceX’s space-based data centers.
Water usage was another detail addressed in the announcement. SpaceX said it’s committing to use water from the local Gibbons Creek Reservoir. This approach is meant to avoid relying on local groundwater supplies.
This announcement came just one day after a heavily attended county meeting. Hundreds of residents showed up on Wednesday to discuss the project. Many raised concerns during that meeting. Some focused on the millions of dollars in tax breaks awarded to support the project. Others raised concerns about a lack of transparency throughout the process.

Not everyone voiced concern, though. Dr. Sarah Borowicz, superintendent of the Anderson-Shiro Consolidated Independent School District, shared a more optimistic view. Her statement was released by the Texas Governor’s office. She said the agreement would strengthen the district and expand opportunities for students.
She described this moment as one of the defining points in the district’s history. She also emphasized a commitment to managing the opportunity wisely, transparently, and always with students’ interests at the center of every decision made going forward.
