Why WhatsApp Is Testing Chat Restrictions on Android Beta

WhatsApp is rolling out Restricted Chats to Android beta testers. This adds real controls over individual conversations. These controls go beyond the platform’s existing encryption protections. The feature specifically addresses a known vulnerability. Third-party tools and AI agents have accessed messages through linked devices. This often happened without users even realizing it.

Help Net Security first reported this feature back in September 2026. The outlet noted WhatsApp’s specific concern at the time. “Some people pair their accounts with modified web clients that can read their conversations,” the report explained.

These tools then forward messages to AI systems without consent. Restricted Chats directly addresses this exact attack vector. It prevents conversation access through WhatsApp Web entirely. It also blocks access via secondary phones and other linked devices.

Once enabled through the chat info screen, Restricted Chats applies four specific limitations. These apply to individual conversations.

  • First, media received in restricted chats no longer saves automatically to the device gallery. This gives users control over what appears in their camera roll.
  • Second, conversation exports become disabled entirely. This prevents users from downloading message histories for external processing or archiving purposes.
  • Third, Meta AI features stop working within restricted chats. This removes one pathway AI agents previously used to analyze conversation content.
  • Fourth, the feature blocks access through WhatsApp Web and secondary devices. This closes the exact vulnerability that concerned WhatsApp engineers.

The current Android beta rollout reaches version 2.26.39.11. It’s being distributed through the Google Play Store. WABetaInfo noted something important about the rollout pattern. “Not every beta tester will see it immediately,” the outlet reported. This suggests a phased deployment approach, typical of how WhatsApp tests new features.

Notably, this feature currently doesn’t work for group chats. This limits its initial usefulness for team communications. It also limits utility for shared conversations common in professional and social settings.

The timeline for general public availability remains unannounced at this point. Beta testers noted the feature was “not switched on” during the original September announcement window. However, this current beta rollout suggests something important.

WhatsApp continues refining the feature’s implementation before a full public release. Linked device restrictions and export controls likely need additional testing. This would cover various network conditions and different device types.

This privacy upgrade sets WhatsApp apart from its competitors right now. Both are still developing similar controls of their own. Signal and Telegram offer message encryption by default. Still, they lack WhatsApp’s specific per-conversation restriction options.

Restricted Chats reflects an important acknowledgment from WhatsApp. Encryption alone doesn’t fully protect against certain threats. That includes risks from compromised linked devices. It also includes unauthorized AI processing of conversation content.
