Some interface updates are mildly annoying. Bright buttons urging you to subscribe inside mobile apps are usually easy to ignore. Other design changes are so intrusive that they make you want to throw your phone in a river. X has introduced a new push to get users to promote their posts. This aggressive UI element firmly belongs in the second category.
Over the last twenty-four hours, a growing number of users noticed a strange visual addition. A mysterious pointing hand appeared directly next to the promote button. This graphic popped up suddenly while people were actively writing new posts. The sudden interface change has irritated platform users across the board.
Halloween is currently approaching fast. Some observers joked that the graphic might be a seasonal prank meant to spook users. However, X has not released any official statement confirming that theory. Even regular users who normally want to promote content and spend money might feel hesitant. Seeing an unexpected floating hand can easily scare potential advertisers away.

Dylan Abruscato serves as the president of the TBPN podcast. He commented publicly on the aggressive interface update. He stated that this particular engagement trick was the most “Nikita-coded thing I’ve ever seen.” His remark was a direct nod to the aggressive growth tactics associated with Nikita Bier. Bier previously served as the head of product at X.
Bier departed from the platform back in August after spending roughly a year at the helm. Following that departure, leadership shifted.
On Monday, Bier’s former boss posted an official update online. Peter Sellis, who previously worked as the head of product for Snap and Discord, announced that he has officially taken over as X’s new product chief.
It remains unclear whether the mysterious pointing hand was introduced by Sellis. Technology journalists have reached out to X for an official comment regarding the design choice. Reporters plan to update the story if the company responds with an explanation.
