Google is forcing schools to accept its AI tools if they want to keep using Google Search.

Schools Can Disable Google AI, But It Sacrifices Search

Google announced on Tuesday that it plans to disable AI tools for K-12 students next year. This restriction applies unless school administrators explicitly turn those features on. The tech giant stated that the upcoming change follows extensive consultations with schools, teachers, leading researchers, and policymakers. As a result, Google is revising its product approach across Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search.

This new decision creates a major challenge for educators. Schools that choose to restrict artificial intelligence altogether will lose access to Google Search entirely. That happens because AI features are now deeply embedded within the core search engine.

Chris Phillips serves as the vice president for education at Google. He explained the situation to The New York Times. “Search and AI are deeply integrated,” Phillips said. He noted that if a school chooses to block AI entirely, students “will not have access to search, and they’ll see a message from their school that indicates it’s not available.”

The change creates a difficult dilemma for classrooms. Teachers might want to prevent students from relying on AI Overviews in Google Search during research or assignments. At the same time, those teachers still want students to use the traditional search engine to find reliable sources and educational materials.

However, Google Search and its built-in AI functions are now inseparable. Google software and Chromebook laptops hold a dominant position across the education sector. This reality highlights the massive influence the company wields over modern schools. Educational institutions that want to keep using Google Search must now accept its AI components.

“We’ll share more specifics with schools in the coming months ahead of the changes rolling out so they have time to prepare and enable a smooth transition,” Phillips wrote in a public blog post. “Our goal is simple: provide school leaders the control and confidence to use AI products in classrooms as they see fit.”

Google announced this policy update alongside the classroom rollout of Guided Learning. The tool was initially unveiled earlier this year. It functions essentially like an AI tutor designed to help users build a deep understanding. It avoids simply handing out direct answers. This rollout arrives amid widespread industry concerns that traditional AI chatbots undermine student learning by instantly providing shortcuts.
