WhatsApp ordered to stop sharing user data with Facebook

France monitoring authority CNIL has ordered WhatsApp to stop sharing the user data with its parent company Facebook. In a a public notice posted to the French website, the app is given 30 days to comply with the order.

The eye brows were raised when WhatsApp added to its terms of service at the end of the last year stating it shares data with Facebook to reach-out to the targeted advertisers, security measures and to collect business intelligence.

CNIL investigation ruled that although WhatsApp intentions for improving security measures were acceptable, the business intelligence reason is unacceptable.

That violates “the fundamental freedoms of users,” CNIL.

Facebook and WhatsApp data sharing has always been a concern in the past. Germany also ordered Facebook to stop collecting data from WhatsApp users last year.

Facebook has not responded to the concern yet.
