Facebook Introduces New Settings to Let Users Customize Feed Algorithms

Facebook is the latest social platform to give users more control over their feeds. Users can now shape the algorithm that decides what they see. Meta announced the feature on Tuesday. It’s called “Your Algorithm.” Meta first launched it on Instagram.

How “Your Algorithm” Works

The tool lets Facebook users guide what appears in Feed and Reels. They do it by describing their preferences in their own words. They can use plain, natural language. Users don’t have to depend entirely on automated recommendations. They can tell the platform which topics they want to see more or less often.

Meta’s Goal

Meta says the feature should make recommendations more relevant. Users can adjust their preferences and interact with the systems that rank and recommend posts. Changes show up in their recommendations in real time.

An Updated Three-Dot Menu

Meta also updated Facebook’s three-dot menu. Managing content preferences is now easier from any single post. Users can open the menu and find “Your Algorithm.” They can also tap “Interested” or “Not interested.” Those buttons show whether a post matches what they want.

Follow-Up Questions

The platform may ask follow-up questions. These help it understand what a user liked or disliked. Users can then give more detailed feedback. They can explain what they want to see more or less of. Facebook uses those answers to refine its recommendations.

A Shift in How Feeds Work

“Your Algorithm” reflects a broader effort at Meta. The company wants people to have more say over their social media experience. AI increasingly shapes how people find content. This move signals a break from the traditional recommendation systems that defined social media for years. It brings Facebook closer to streaming services. Those services already let users personalize recommendations around their interests.

Building on Instagram and Threads

The launch builds on Meta’s work across its other platforms. Instagram introduced Your Algorithm in June. It extended customization across Feed and Explore. The feature first reached Reels in December 2025. Threads has its own related feature. It’s called “Dear Algo.” It also lets users influence what the platform recommends.

Why It Matters

For years, people had few ways to steer their feeds. They could like, follow, or mute. The algorithm did the rest. Plain-language controls change that. A user can now say what they want and see results quickly.

The change may also help Meta. Better-matched feeds can keep people engaged longer. Users who feel in control may trust the platform more.

Some questions remain. It’s unclear how closely the system will follow each request. It’s also unclear how many people will use the controls. Their adoption will show whether this becomes a standard feature or a niche one.
