Google Allows Users to Remove Watermarks From Gemini-Generated Content

Google is giving users more control over watermarks. This applies specifically to AI-generated content. The company is adding a new option. Users will be able to remove visible watermarks. This applies to images created with Nano Banana. The new setting will appear in Gemini and Flow. Google also has plans for the near future. The company intends to bring this option to AI Mode in Google Search as well.

This change extends beyond just images, though. Users will also gain a similar option for video. They’ll be able to remove visible watermarks from videos made with Gemini Omni. The same capability will apply to music too. That includes songs created with Lyria.

There’s one major exception to this rollout. Google has been clear about this limitation. The option won’t be available everywhere. Specifically, it won’t work in countries where watermarking is legally required.

It’s important to understand what this change actually does. Removing the visible watermark doesn’t make content completely unmarked. Google will continue using other identification methods. That includes its invisible SynthID watermark. It also includes C2PA metadata. These technologies serve an important purpose. They help identify content created using Google’s AI tools. Because of this, users still have a reliable option. They can ask Gemini directly whether an image was AI-generated.

Gemini can check these available signals when asked. It can then confirm whether an image was actually created using AI. This gives users a genuine way to verify content. That verification works even when the visible watermark has been removed.

Overall, this move offers real flexibility for creators. At the same time, it keeps Google’s AI identification systems fully in place. The change also addresses a common complaint. Many users have specifically criticized Nano Banana’s visible watermark in the past.
