Data centers face widespread public disapproval. But the industry might change public perception by changing the name.
Axios reports that OpenAI is planning an extensive PR campaign following Tuesday’s midterm elections. Political analysts suggest Democrats may reclaim control of the House of Representatives, with a potential win in the Senate as well.
Chris Lehane serves as OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer. He told Axios that the midterm outcomes will act as a preview for the 2028 political landscape. Lehane expects artificial intelligence to become the central issue in the next presidential election.

OpenAI aims to shape future discussions around AI policy. Lehane outlined several key initiatives during the conversation. These ideas include establishing AI safety speed limits and showing citizens how AI can enhance daily routines. He also urged the United States to take the lead on global regulatory standards. Additionally, the plan involves renaming data centers as “AI compute campuses.”
Lehane praised the ongoing public debate surrounding data center expansion, calling the public discourse both constructive and healthy. Recent pushback led tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft to abandon non-disclosure agreements when negotiating with municipal governments.
Lehane emphasized that local communities must hold corporations accountable. He stated that residents deserve genuine, long-term economic benefits from these massive infrastructure projects.
