Artificial intelligence is becoming a bigger part of the economy. But many Americans are still unsure about its future impact. A new Pew Research study shows that public opinion about AI is divided. Many people have concerns about where the technology is heading.
AI use is growing in daily life. However, many Americans are still not convinced that it will benefit society. The study found that only 16% of Americans believe AI will have a positive impact over the next 20 years. Around 40% think its effects will be negative.
Trust is another major concern. Many Americans do not expect the government to properly control AI development. About 67% of people said they do not believe the government will take meaningful action. Around 59% also said they do not trust companies to develop AI safely.

Younger Americans are especially doubtful about AI. Only 14% of people under 30 believe it will have a positive impact on society. Many people also think AI is moving too quickly. Nearly two-thirds of Americans said the technology is advancing faster than they would like.
Still, concerns have not stopped people from using AI. Chatbots are becoming common for work, research, and daily tasks. About one in four Americans say they use AI chatbots every day.
ChatGPT is currently the most popular AI chatbot in the U.S. Around 44% of adults say they use OpenAI’s chatbot. That number has more than doubled since 2023. Other AI tools are also gaining users. Gemini is used by 24% of adults.
Copilot has 17% of users, while Meta AI has 14%. Grok, Claude, and Character.ai have smaller user bases. The survey also found differences between men and women. Both groups are using AI more than before.
However, men are more likely to use AI tools. They are also more positive about the technology. About 27% of men use AI chatbots daily. For women, the number is around 20%.
Both men and women use ChatGPT at similar rates. But men are more likely to use other AI platforms. AI is also changing how people get information online. Many Americans now see AI-generated summaries while browsing the internet.

Around six in ten people said they regularly come across these summaries. Fewer people use AI for things like fitness and diet advice. Even with AI becoming popular, many Americans still avoid it. About half of the country says they do not use AI in daily life.
Age is a major factor. Younger adults are more likely to use AI tools. Older people are less interested. Nearly 75% of adults aged 65 and above say they have never used AI chatbots.
Many non-users say they are simply not interested. They also do not plan to start using AI anytime soon.
