Google DeepMind Shakes Up Leadership as Demis Hassabis Moves to Chairman Role

Google DeepMind has restructured its top leadership, with CEO Demis Hassabis giving up day-to-day control of the unit to become chairman of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet, according to reporting from Bloomberg and Fortune. The move formalizes a shift for Hassabis away from daily management and toward AGI strategy and the scientific applications of AI.

Who Is Taking Over

Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind’s chief technology officer and Alphabet’s chief AI architect, is stepping into daily operations as senior vice president of Google DeepMind, reporting directly to Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai rather than holding a standalone CEO title, Bloomberg reported. Kavukcuoglu will oversee Gemini model development going forward. Lila Ibrahim, DeepMind’s Chief AI Readiness Officer, will now report to senior Google executive James Manyika, according to Time’s coverage of the reshuffle.

A Wider Departure at Google

The leadership change coincides with the departure of Jeff Dean, a longtime Google engineer central to the company’s AI strategy, who is leaving to launch an independent public benefit corporation called Discovery Loop, according to Fortune. Google senior fellow Sanjay Ghemawat is departing alongside him, taking several other high-profile colleagues with them.

Context: Pressure on Gemini’s Roadmap

Fortune reported that the reshuffle comes at a difficult moment for Google DeepMind, with the flagship version of its Gemini model still unreleased despite an originally planned June launch, fueling investor and industry concern that Google is losing ground to rivals such as Anthropic and OpenAI. Alphabet shares fell 4% on the day the changes were announced, per the same reporting.

Why It Matters

Leadership stability at Google DeepMind matters well beyond Alphabet’s own stock price. Gemini underpins a wide range of products that businesses, developers, and freelancers build on top of, from Google Workspace AI features to third-party tools that call Gemini’s APIs. A change in command during a period of model delays and talent departures is worth watching for anyone whose workflow depends on Google’s AI roadmap staying on schedule.
