Microsoft is extending voluntary buyout packages to roughly 60,000 staff members. A company spokesperson confirmed the decision to TechCrunch on Monday. The strategy aligns with Microsoft’s ongoing effort to trim operating expenses. It also reflects a broader shift toward restructuring its workforce for artificial intelligence.
Amy Coleman serves as Microsoft’s chief people officer. She distributed an internal memorandum detailing the voluntary exit plan. The message was simultaneously posted on the organization’s official site.
The offer applies to select groups operating in four key regions. Eligible staff reside in the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom. Participation is open to team members holding vice president roles or lower positions. According to reporting from Bloomberg, several major business units are included. Xbox, Windows, Copilot, and Finance teams are among those eligible. Conversely, certain operational areas remain off-limits. Personnel working in data centers, sales, and marketing cannot apply.

Business Insider initially broke the story regarding the buyout initiative.
“The Voluntary Exit Offer represents a significant step in modifying our strategy toward organizational change,” the official memo explains. “It establishes increased flexibility. Where feasible, it offers staff additional avenues to design their next career phase. This program provides qualified employees contemplating a career change an immediate path forward with dedicated corporate assistance.”
Microsoft noted that eligible staff would get a direct email notification on Monday. The message includes a link to specific voluntary departure terms. The proposed financial compensation matches Microsoft’s standard severance guidelines.
“Introducing a Voluntary Exit Offer is a fresh concept for our team,” the memo continues. “We intend to gather insights from this process. Meanwhile, we will support staff in prioritizing high-impact projects. We will also help them acquire modern skill sets and transition to new internal roles where appropriate. Every business unit and worker requires a tailored strategy. This program is one of several measures intended to fulfill shifting operational goals while giving our staff room to advance.”

The voluntary departure program offers Microsoft a smoother path toward downsizing. It helps the firm avoid the friction usually tied to traditional layoffs. Additionally, this is not Microsoft’s first time utilizing buyout packages. The tech giant launched a similar program for retirement-eligible workers earlier this year. Over 30% of the approximately 8,750 eligible staff accepted that offer.
Microsoft reported an overall global workforce of 223,000 employees as of late June.
