Instagram has officially launched Instagram Plus, a new optional subscription that costs $3.99 per month in the United States. The package includes 11 premium features. These tools give users more control over stories, profiles, and performance data. Meta says the regular Instagram experience will remain free for everyone.
Instagram described the new offering by saying:
“Instagram Plus offers exclusive features to help you express yourself, connect deeper with friends, and customize your experience in new ways. The Instagram you know and love today isn’t changing and will always be free; this new subscription is simply an optional upgrade for people who want more control, deeper insights, and premium features.”
One of the key features is Story Spotlight. It allows subscribers to place a story at the front of the Stories tray. Followers will see it first. Users can use this boost once every week.

Another addition is Story Extend. This feature keeps a story active for an extra 24 hours. It gives followers more time to view the content and can help increase reach.
Instagram Plus also includes multiple story audiences. Users can create unlimited audience groups for stories. This goes beyond the standard Close Friends feature. It allows more precise content sharing with different groups of followers.
The most attention-grabbing feature may be Story Preview. It lets subscribers watch other users’ stories anonymously. Their names do not appear in the viewer list. This means people can view stories without being identified.

The subscription also introduces new analytics tools. Story Rewatch Insights shows how many times a story was viewed again. This gives users a better understanding of audience interest and engagement.
Another analytics feature is Search Viewer List. Users can search their story viewers. This makes it easy to check whether a specific account has viewed their content.
Instagram Plus also adds Super Hearts. These are animated reactions that appear when users respond to friends’ stories. The hearts spread across the screen and make interactions more noticeable.

Several profile customization options are included as well. Subscribers can now pin up to six posts on their profile. Regular users can pin only three. This gives more space to highlight important content.
Subscribers also get access to custom bio fonts. These fonts help users personalize their profiles and strengthen their branding.
Another customization feature is a collection of alternate app icons. These icons are designed by Instagram and selected creators. Users can choose the look they prefer for the Instagram app.
The package also includes Post Directly to Profile. This feature allows users to publish content to their profile grid or highlights without showing it in followers’ feeds. It can help users organize their profiles without drawing attention to every update.
Even with the launch of Instagram Plus, advertising remains Meta’s primary source of income. Around 98% of the company’s revenue still comes from ads. That limits the impact any subscription product can have on the overall business.

Similar subscription services have seen modest adoption rates. Less than 1% of X users pay for X Premium. YouTube Premium has attracted about 4.5% of YouTube’s user base.
Meta likely expects Instagram Plus to appeal to a small segment of users. Even so, a subscription rate of around 2% across Instagram’s billion-plus users could create a meaningful new revenue stream. The additional income could help support Meta’s growing investments in artificial intelligence.
