Spotify is formalizing its enterprise and developer tools business. On Thursday, the company launched technology.spotify.com. This new site makes Spotify’s internal tech available to outsiders.
The company’s move into this space isn’t exactly new. Spotify points this out in its announcement of the new site. It has offered products to the wider tech community since 2020. That’s when it open sourced Backstage. Backstage is a platform and framework for building customizable developer portals.
Spotify has sold other tools too. It has sold its enterprise-focused software experimentation platform, Confidence, since 2023. It has sold its enterprise software development platform, Portal, since 2024. Earlier this year, it began selling Xirp. That’s a developer tool for managing AI coding agents.
Many technology companies build their own internal systems. These help their developers work more efficiently. Still, it’s somewhat unusual to see a company like Spotify sell those tools to other businesses.
Tyson Singer, Spotify’s SVP of Technology & Platform, acknowledged this. He said the company’s move has raised questions.
“I get asked a version of this question every day: why is Spotify in the business of selling software?” he wrote in a post on Spotify’s engineering site. “The truth is, the Spotify you know and love is more than a great streaming service. Behind our consumer app are hundreds of cross-functional squads shipping products and code day in, day out,” he explained.

The new technology website will house the solutions Spotify built for its own audience. That audience is 777 million monthly active users. The site includes both open source and paid services.
AI has made building such software faster. Still, Spotify says this doesn’t mean it’s simpler. “The complexity, the cost and the operational surface area all grow with it,” Singer wrote. The company is making a bet. It believes software development teams will still need certain core services, even as AI advances. Spotify says the services it sells will be agent-ready.
So far, it’s unclear how much revenue these enterprise sales generate. Spotify hasn’t disclosed those figures in its financial reporting. That could change as the company pushes harder into the enterprise market. What was once a side business could become a more formal operation.
The technology website doesn’t list pricing. Instead, companies can fill out a form. They can contact sales and discuss their needs.
